| Summary | 1 GiB = 1073.741824 MB |
1 GiB is 1073.74 MB — not 1024 MB — because a GiB is 1024³ bytes while an MB is 1000² bytes.
Convert digital storage between bits, bytes and the two competing 'kilo' systems. SI units (KB, MB, GB, TB) are powers of 1000, as used by hard-drive manufacturers and macOS. IEC units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) are powers of 1024, as used by Windows and most software.
That is why a '500 GB' drive shows as about 465 GiB in Windows: 500 × 1000³ ÷ 1024³ ≈ 465.66. One byte is 8 bits.

Worked example
1 GiB is 1073.74 MB — not 1024 MB — because a GiB is 1024³ bytes while an MB is 1000² bytes.

Frequently asked questions
Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?
Both, depending on the system: the SI kilobyte is exactly 1000 bytes, and the IEC kibibyte (KiB) is exactly 1024 bytes. Drive makers use 1000; Windows reports 1024-based values but labels them KB/MB/GB.
Why does my 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?
It is showing gibibytes: 1 TB = 1000⁴ bytes ÷ 1024³ ≈ 931.3 GiB. No space is missing — the units differ.
How many bits are in a byte?
Exactly 8 bits. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second (Mbps), file sizes in bytes, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most about 12.5 MB per second.
