Summary1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³

1 g/cm³ is exactly 1000 kg/m³ — the density of water, and the reason the two unit systems convert so cleanly.

Convert density through kilograms per cubic metre. The metric units line up neatly: 1 g/cm³ = exactly 1000 kg/m³, and g/mL is the same thing (water at 4 °C is 1.000 g/cm³). The imperial units: 1 lb/ft³ = 16.0184634 kg/m³ and 1 lb per US gallon = 119.826 kg/m³.

Reference points: water 1000 kg/m³, ice 917, aluminium 2700, steel about 7850, gold 19,300 — dense enough that a gold brick weighs roughly 12.4 kg.

The formula

Result = Value × (factor of from-unit in kg/m³) ÷ (factor of to-unit in kg/m³)

Frequently asked questions

What is the density of water in lb/ft³?

About 62.43 lb/ft³ (1000 kg/m³ ÷ 16.0184634). Engineers often round to 62.4.

Are g/cm³ and g/mL different?

No — since 1 cm³ is exactly 1 mL, the values are identical. Labs use g/mL for liquids and g/cm³ for solids, but the number never changes.

How do I get specific gravity from density?

Divide the density in kg/m³ by 1000 (or read g/cm³ directly) — specific gravity is density relative to water, so the g/cm³ value is the specific gravity.
