2^10 = 1,024 — the reason computing counts in powers of two (a kilobyte was traditionally 1,024 bytes). The square of 2 is 4 and its cube is 8.

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself: 2^10 means 2 multiplied by itself ten times, which is 1,024. Powers grow extremely fast — that is why compound interest and population growth feel explosive over time.

Enter a base and an exponent. Negative exponents give reciprocals (2^−3 = 1/8 = 0.125) and fractional exponents give roots (9^0.5 = 3). The square and cube of the base are shown alongside for quick reference.

The formula

Result = base^exponent (base multiplied by itself, exponent times)

Frequently asked questions

Why is any number to the power of 0 equal to 1?

Because dividing a power by the base reduces the exponent by one: 2^3 ÷ 2 = 2^2, 2^2 ÷ 2 = 2^1, so continuing, 2^1 ÷ 2 = 2^0 must equal 1. It holds for every non-zero base.

What does a negative exponent mean?

It means 'one over' the positive power: 5^−2 = 1/25 = 0.04. Negative exponents are how very small numbers are written compactly in science.

What is a fractional exponent?

The denominator becomes a root: x^(1/2) is the square root of x, and 8^(1/3) is the cube root of 8, which is 2. x^(3/2) means cube it and take the square root (or the other way round).
