A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft; with 10% waste you need 132 sq ft of flooring, which is 7 boxes at 20 sq ft per box (140 sq ft purchased).

Enter the room size and the coverage printed on the flooring box (sq ft per box) to find how many boxes to buy. The calculator adds your waste allowance first, then rounds UP to whole boxes — flooring is only sold in full boxes.

Use 10% waste for straight plank layouts in square rooms, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with closets and jogs. The square-feet-purchased figure shows how much flooring you actually take home, which is always a bit more than the room because of the round-up.

The formula

Boxes = ceil(Room area × (1 + waste%) ÷ sq ft per box)

Frequently asked questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

10% for straight installations, 15% for diagonal or herringbone, and keep one unopened box afterwards for future repairs — batches and dye lots change.

Where do I find sq ft per box?

It is printed on the box label and in the product listing. Laminate and LVP boxes usually cover 18–25 sq ft; hardwood varies more by plank width and length mix.

Should closets be included?

Yes — measure closets as separate small rectangles and add their area by running them as an extra room and combining the box counts.
