Convert a Unix timestamp — seconds since January 1, 1970 — into a human-readable UTC date and time, or turn a date and time into its Unix timestamp.

Timestamps are timezone-free counts of seconds, which is why the date side of this converter is always shown in UTC.

The formula

Timestamp = seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC; Date = timestamp × 1000 ms rendered in UTC

Frequently asked questions

Seconds or milliseconds?

This converter uses seconds, the classic Unix convention. If your timestamp has 13 digits it is in milliseconds — divide by 1,000 before entering it.

Why is the date shown in UTC?

A timestamp identifies one instant worldwide. Showing it in UTC keeps the conversion unambiguous; convert to a local zone afterwards with the Time Zone Converter if needed.

What is the epoch?

The Unix epoch is 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. Timestamp 0 is that moment, and negative timestamps are moments before it.
