Target emergency fund$18,000

Essential spending of $3,000 a month needs an $18,000 fund for 6 months of cover; with $5,000 saved, $13,000 remains — 26 months at $500 a month.

An emergency fund is usually sized in months of essential spending, not income. Enter your monthly essential expenses, pick a target of 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, and add what you have already saved.

The calculator shows the target fund, how much remains, and — from the amount you can save each month — how many months it will take to get there, rounded up to the next whole month. Three months is a common starter target; six or more suits single incomes, variable earnings or dependants.

The formula

Target = Monthly essentials × months; Months to reach = ceil((Target − saved) ÷ monthly saving)

Frequently asked questions

How many months of expenses should I hold?

Three months is a widely recommended minimum, six months is the standard target, and 9–12 months suits freelancers, single earners and anyone whose job would take long to replace.

Which expenses count as essential?

Housing, utilities, basic groceries, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments — the spending that cannot pause if your income stops. Discretionary spending is excluded, which is why the fund is based on essentials, not total spending.
