On $5,000 take-home pay, the classic 50/30/20 split is $2,500 for needs, $1,500 for wants and $1,000 for savings.

The 50/30/20 rule divides after-tax income into needs (50%), wants (30%) and savings and extra debt payments (20%). Enter your monthly take-home pay to see the target amount for each bucket.

You can adjust the three percentages to fit your life — a high-rent city may force needs to 60%, for example — but they must add up to exactly 100%, and the calculator will tell you if they do not.

The formula

Needs = Income × needs%; Wants = Income × wants%; Savings = Income × savings%

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a need versus a want?

Needs are the essentials: housing, utilities, groceries, transport to work, insurance and minimum debt payments. Wants are everything that improves life but is optional: dining out, streaming, holidays and upgrades. Extra debt payments above the minimum count as savings.

What if my needs exceed 50%?

That is common in expensive cities. Use a custom split (the three numbers must still total 100%) and treat the classic rule as a direction to move in over time — for example by growing income or trimming fixed costs at the next lease or contract renewal.
