10,000 words take 50 minutes to read at 200 wpm, and about 1 hour 17 minutes to present aloud at 130 wpm.

Enter a word count and your reading speed to estimate how long a book, article or script will take to read silently. The calculator also estimates speaking time at 130 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations and narration.

Average adult silent reading is roughly 200–250 words per minute for non-technical text; technical material is slower. To get a word count from pages, multiply pages by about 250 words for a typical paperback page.

The formula

Reading time = Words ÷ reading WPM; Speaking time = Words ÷ 130 WPM

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical book in reading time?

An 80,000-word novel at 200 wpm takes about 6 hours 40 minutes of reading. At a page a minute (roughly 250 words per page), that is about 320 pages.

Why is speaking time longer than reading time?

People speak at about 130–150 words per minute but read silently at 200 or more, so the same script always takes longer to deliver than to read.
