Saving vs the other product10.00%

Product 1 costs $0.50 per unit and product 2 $0.45 per unit — product 2 is better value, a 10% saving per unit.

Bigger packs are not always better value. Enter the price and quantity of two products — same units for both, such as ounces or grams — and this calculator compares their unit prices and tells you which is better and by what percentage.

Quantities must be in the same unit for a fair comparison; most supermarket shelf labels already print a unit price you can check against.

The formula

Unit price = Price ÷ Quantity; Saving% = (higher − lower) ÷ higher × 100

Worked example

Frequently asked questions

How is the saving percentage calculated?

As the difference between the two unit prices divided by the higher unit price. Dropping from $0.50 to $0.45 per unit saves $0.05, which is 10% of $0.50.

Is the bigger pack always the better deal?

No — promotions on smaller packs regularly undercut bulk pricing per unit, and a large pack you cannot finish before it expires is no saving at all. The unit price tells the truth.
